Program Description – Clinical Laboratory Services

Functional versus Pathological perspective.
Our focus at Dr Akers Natural Health Clinic is dedicated to looking at our patients health data from a holistic rather than mechanistic or reductionistic perspective. We use diagnostic methods that focus on physiological function as a marker of health rather than only the presence of pathology or tissue change as a marker of disease used in conventional hospital and doctors offices. Our approach is to educate our patients about how they are functioning so they can manage their health with our help.

Pathological View

Body is viewed as a “machine” with complex separate systems reduced into parts.

Focus is on identification of disease or pathological tissue change.

Diagnosis is extremely specialized.

Treatment is based on reducing symptoms.

Major emphasis is placed on how the patient is doing based on test results that are measured against statistical “normal population”.

Functional View

Body is viewed as a dynamic and interconnected system of mind, body and spirit.

Focus on identification of areas of imbalance or dysfunction of normal physiology.

Diagnosis integrates data from many different systems and methods.

Treatment addresses the underlying causes of dysfunction.

Major emphasis is placed on subjective and objective information gathering based on the comcept of optimal physiological function.
